Alert: Please Keep Fire Hydrants Visible

February 11, 2010

While many are concerned with the roadways and shoveling out cars, we must not forget to keep local area fire hydrants clear from snow. While shoveling your driveway, sidewalk, etc. or even when plowing it is imperative to keep the hydrants unobstructed.

This past snowstorm brings about special concerns to the Hicksville Water District. Plowing of snow many times covers the District’s 1,600 plus fire hydrants, making it near impossible to locate them quickly in emergency situations.

In the event of a fire, precious time is lost when firefighters have to locate and shovel out fire hydrants before hooking up to them. Commissioner Nick Brigandi asks HWD customers, “Keep the fire hydrant closest to your residence or business clear of snow, approximately a 3-foot radius around the hydrant.” Additionally, Brigandi warns, “All residents and business owners should be extremely careful when shoveling snow and be aware of vehicle traffic.”

Meteorologists from the weather service are warning us of another storm system that will make its way into our area early next week. HWD asks residents to adopt-a-hydrant and when clearing snow from their sidewalks to also take the extra time to ensure the hydrant is clearly visible.
